Short answer: the cheapest common option is an overnight joint bus + ferry ticket for about ฿1,150. Lomprayah’s bus + catamaran at ฿1,350 costs ฿200 more and uses a faster boat. Both leave Bangkok in the evening and reach Koh Phangan mid-morning, so you also save a night’s hotel.
The prices, with sources
1. Joint bus + ferry: from ฿1,150
The Ferry Connect 2026 timetable (effective 25 Aug 2026) lists:
- 21:00 bus + ferry → 10:30, ฿1,150
- 21:30 bus + catamaran → 10:30, ฿1,350, VIP ฿1,650
- A 06:00 day departure arriving around 16:45 if you’d rather not travel overnight
All of these go via Chumphon, taking about 13–13.5 hours in total.
2. Lomprayah bus + catamaran: ฿1,350 (VIP ฿1,650)
Lomprayah’s joint ticket is ฿1,350 standard / ฿1,650 VIP for adults and ฿675 / ฿825 for children. It’s listed as valid until 31 Dec 2026 on agent pages such as chillpainai and tripstorekrabi. The official timetable is on lomprayah.com/schedule.
3. Sleeper train + boat: comfortable, not always cheaper
Second-class sleeper berths from Bangkok (Krung Thep Aphiwat) to Surat Thani cost, per the third-party timetable site asiatraintime:
| Train | 2nd-class sleeper |
|---|---|
| Rapid 167 / 169 / 171 / 173 | ฿724 |
| Special Express 37 / 45, Express 83 / 85 | ฿804 |
| Special Express 31 | ฿1,004 |
Add the onward boat: from Chumphon, a Koh Phangan ferry is roughly ฿700–800 (third-party estimate, insidesamui). From Surat Thani / Donsak, allow about 5–7 hours for bus + ferry. In total, the train costs about the same as, or more than, the joint ticket. You pay extra for a flat bed. Not yet verified — we'll update this after checking first-hand
4. Flying
Flights to Surat Thani or Koh Samui plus a boat are the fastest option, but fares change daily and we haven’t checked them. Not checked yet — we'll add this after checking first-hand Samui flights are usually the most expensive way in.
Which one should you book?
- Tightest budget: the ฿1,150 overnight bus + ferry.
- Best value for most people: Lomprayah bus + catamaran (฿1,350), one company, one ticket.
- You hate night buses: sleeper train to Chumphon or Surat Thani, then the boat.
- Short on time: fly, but check the total including the boat.
Tips to pay less
- Book direct or compare. Check the operator’s price against 12Go. Agent sites can add fees. Compare the final total.
- Avoid Full Moon Party dates or book early. The cheap departures sell out first.
- Pay in baht. Thai ATMs charge foreign cards about ฿250 (Visa) or ฿350 (Mastercard) per withdrawal, per Kasikorn and Krungsri fee schedules. A multi-currency card like Wise and fewer, larger withdrawals help. Compare the options in our trip cost calculator.
- No 12Go promo code exists right now. See our 12Go page for official offers.
