Short answer: from Suvarnabhumi (BKK), the Airport Rail Link is the cheapest fast route at ฿15–45. From Don Mueang (DMK), the A1/A2 bus at ฿30 or the Red Line at ฿33 are the cheapest. Take a metered taxi only if you’re a group or arrive after the trains stop.

From Suvarnabhumi (BKK)

Per the Thai government’s official guide, the Rail Link runs 05:30–midnight from the airport basement (B1). Fares run ฿15 to ฿45 in ฿5 steps per station, so it’s ฿45 to Phaya Thai, about 30 minutes. Change at Phaya Thai for the BTS or Makkasan for the MRT (Phetchaburi). The Bangkok Post warns it gets crowded at 07:00–09:00 and 16:00–19:00, which is awkward with big suitcases.

Bus S1: about ฿60 to Khao San

Suvarnabhumi’s official BMTA page lists S1 to Khao San and Sanam Luang, 06:00–20:00, about ฿60, plus 554 to Don Mueang (about ฿35) if you’re connecting between airports.

Public taxi: meter + ฿50

Taxis board on Floor 1, Gates 4–7, from a queue-ticket machine. The airport’s taxi page says you pay the meter, a ฿50 airport surcharge and expressway tolls, plus luggage fees set by the Ministry of Transport. If a driver refuses the meter and quotes a flat fee, that’s an offence: the government’s transport page gives hotline 1584.

From Don Mueang (DMK)

Buses A1–A4: ฿30–50

Don Mueang’s official BMTA page lists, from Terminal 1, Floor 1, Gate 6:

BusToHoursFare
A1Mo Chit 2 (BTS Mo Chit, MRT Chatuchak nearby)05:45–24:00, every 15 min฿30
A2Victory Monument06:00–23:00, every 15 min฿30
A3Lumpini Park06:00–23:00, every 30 min฿50
A4Sanam Luang (Old Town)06:00–23:00, every 30 min฿50

SRT Red Line: ฿33

The official Red Line fare table gives Don Mueang → Krung Thep Aphiwat: ฿33 for adults. From there, change to the MRT Blue Line, or catch long-distance trains such as the Chiang Mai sleeper.

Money-saving tips on arrival

  1. Don’t change much money at the airport. Thai ATMs charge foreign cards about ฿250 (Visa) to ฿350 (Mastercard) per withdrawal, per Kasikorn and Krungsri fee schedules, so make fewer, larger withdrawals. A Wise card helps avoid conversion markups. Compare cash, ATM and card costs in our trip cost calculator.
  2. Sort data before you land so you can book a ride or check a map at the gate. Compare plans in our cheapest eSIM for Thailand guide. The official Airalo code saves 15% on a first eSIM, and our eSIM data calculator tells you what size plan to buy.
  3. Fill in the free TDAC arrival card on the official site, tdac.immigration.go.th, within 3 days before arrival. Ignore paid look-alike sites. Then check your last legal day with our visa stay calculator.
